“Dead zones” are on the rise, says a new study that identified stark growth in the number of coastal areas where the water has too little oxygen to sustain marine life.

There are now more than 400 known dead zones in coastal waters worldwide, compared to 305 in the 1990s, according to study author Robert Diaz of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

Those numbers are up from 162 in the 1980s, 87 in the 1970s, and 49 in the 1960s, Diaz said. In the 1910s, four dead zones had been identified.

Diaz and co-author Rutger Rosenberg, of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden, said in a press release that dead zones are now “the key stressor on marine ecosystems” and

A global map of “dead zones”—where coastal waters contain too little oxygen to sustain life—shows (as black dots) a concentration in the Northern Hemisphere, where human activity has had the most effect.

As of August 2008, there were more than 400 known “dead zones,” scientists said, up from just over 300 in the 1990s.

The Truth About Bottled Water

3 05 2008

Warning This Video Contains Language that Some May Find Offensive.

But it really hits home about bottled water. I think it is a must watch.

Of course I have my own opinion about bottled water. Enjoy the video.

Bottled water: No longer cool?

13 12 2007

Yep - water costs the same as soda and three times as much as the gas.

aquafina03.jpg

Some brands like PepsiCo’s Aquafina are made from filtered tap water.

So critics are asking: Why drink bottled water?

After all, it’s pricey. Packaging and shipping water consumes energy and contributes to global warming. Empty bottles add to litter and solid waste. And, as a rule, bottled water is no safer or healthier than the H2O that flows from municipal water systems.

What’s more, blind taste tests, while wholly unscientific, often show that few people can distinguish between bottled and tap water.

No wonder environmentalists, shareholder activists and church groups are targeting Coca-Cola (Charts, Fortune 500), PepsiCo (Charts, Fortune 500) and Nestle (Charts), the leading sellers of bottled water. Some examples: Read full article

Juan’s comment:

A great way to make a difference and correct the situation is to use an ionized alkaline producing water filter. The very best water ionizer is the Leveluk SD501 by Enagic. Take a look at the online SD501 brochure here.

The benefits of drinking ionized alkaline water are numerous, starting with the many benefits to your body. The other very important factor is the impact on the environment. I believe that it’s time that everyone start to think about what they are putting in their bodies, where they are putting their money and think about the planet we live on and how to help the planet heal. Every time that we do our part it’s a step in the right direction. By using a counter-top water ionizer we not only get the best hydrating water for our bodies we also reduce the use of plastic and we save money. Yes, you will actually save a lot of money in the long run by owning a Kangen water device.

BOTTLED WATER CONTAMINATION: AN OVERVIEW OF NRDC’S AND OTHERS’ SURVEYS

13 12 2007

Setting aside the question of whether bottled water is as pure as advertised, is the public’s view that bottled water is safer than tap water correct? Certainly the aggressive marketing by the bottled water industry would lead us to believe so.

NRDC undertook a four-year, detailed investigation to evaluate the quality of bottled water. We reviewed published and unpublished literature and data sources, wrote to and interviewed by phone all 50 states asking for any surveys of bottled water quality they have conducted or were aware of, and interviewed experts from FDA. In addition, through three leading independent laboratories, we conducted “snapshot” testing of more than 1,000 bottles of water sold under 103 brand names.

What NRDC has found is in some cases reassuring and in others genuinely troubling. Read full article here

The Difference — Why Kangen Beats the Rest.

30 11 2007

To whom it may concern: Could you SPECIFICALLY tell me what are the distinct differences between Enagic and Jupiter Orion machine…In comparing price, I notice there was a BIG difference. However, in my experience cheaper is not always better. With that said, I would like to know what sets the Enagic machine apart, besides price! If and when responding, please quantify your response (ie, ORP levels, PH levels etc) or explain the material used to construct your machine Vs Jupiter’s Orion (the latest Jupiter machine).
I’m in the process of making a decision to purchase.
Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Audrey

Microbiologists Find Soap and Water Best for Washing Hands, Removing Germs

Microbiologists tested 14 hand-hygiene agents — everything from soap and alcohol rubs to plain old tap water — against hardy bacteria and viruses applied to the hands of 62 volunteers. The study found that soap and water did the best job of removing germs. Just 10 seconds of washing soap and water was enough to knock off more than 90 percent of microbes.

You Can Lead Them to Water…

18 11 2007

You can lead folks to water, but you can’t make them drink. The point being is that I know people who have illnesses and are in pain who suffer from fatigue and other ailments that can be attributed to chronic dehydration. So would water remedy their condition?

I think that it is agreed that drinking good clean water is a great place to start. The problem is not the water intake at this point. The problem is the water source and the means of receiving that water. So you want to heal naturally and you do all that you can to take care of yourself. You buy the best bottled spring water. Most likely from a plastic container. Read this post about the dangers of plastic. Or maybe you feel that distilled water or reverse osmosis is the way to go. Guess again.

These waters are basically dead and purged of minerals. The water will replace these minerals from your body. This can create a whole series of other conditions. I’m not trying to instill fear, I just want to make you aware of the fact that spring water bottled in plastic is acidic and is also in plastic. I don’t believe that allowing PCBs from plastic to enter your body via acidic water is beneficial in any way to any condition or ailment that you may suffer from. By drinking Kangen water from Enagic you are assured that you are drinking clean water, with a pH that will assist to bring your body to a slightly alkaline state. You are also ensuring that your body is absorbing the water at a molecular level because you are drinking Kangen water, which is also known as micro-clustered water or structured water.
