Many Alzheimer’s researchers have long touted fish oil, by pill or diet, as an accessible and inexpensive “weapon” that may delay or prevent this debilitating disease. Now, UCLA scientists have confirmed that fish oil is indeed a deterrent against Alzheimer’s, and they have identified the reasons why.

Greg Cole, professor of medicine and neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and associate director of UCLA’s Alzheimer Disease Research Center, and his colleagues report that the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil increases the production of LR11, a protein that is found at reduced levels in Alzheimer’s patients and which is known to destroy the protein that forms the “plaques”

Healthy Foods Are Too Expensive for Millions, Research Shows

10 01 2008

abc_healthy_food_071218_ms.jpg

Eating right, new research shows, is getting so expensive that millions of Americans can’t afford it.

In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, researchers at the University of Washington focused on the cost of eating foods that are rich in nutrients, and low in calories, like fresh vegetables, whole grains, fish and lean meats. That’s the stuff we’re told we have to eat if we are going to shed a few pounds and remain healthy.

But when the researchers checked prices at numerous stores around the Seattle area, they found that the good, healthy foods had soared in price over a two-year period, jumping by nearly 20 percent compared to a 5 percent increase in the overall food price inflation. And during that same period, high-calorie foods had remained about the same price, and in some cases had actually dropped. Read the full article here

Learn to Read Labels, It’s Good For Your Health

10 10 2007

As you learn to become aware that food quality and health are very important, you will become aware of the benefits of organic food and the healing lifestyle that it brings. It can be very enjoyable learning to eat whole natural and organic foods. Part of the process is learning to read labels. You really have to pay attention to this because the U.S. News and World Report 6/18/90 issue points out that the FDA found 47% of domestic and 76% of foreign foods did not live up to the nutrient billing on the product label.. It should be pointed out as well that because you are shopping in a health food store you should still read labels. Not everything in the health food store is necessarily healthy.

When it comes to food labels the word “natural” can mean almost anything. The safest words to look for in food labeling are “certified organic” By supporting organic farming you are improving your health the health of the planet and the economy, an all around wise choice. A poll conducted by Harris showed that 80% of Americans want organic fruits and vegetables and over 50% are willing to pay the difference to buy organic. Not only are organic foods safer because they are free of pesticides, it has also been suggested that the use of organically prepared soils usually contains a higher concentration of nutrients, like, vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The Firman Bear Report done at Rutgers University found that organically grown foods were much richer in minerals than the similar looking commercial produce. Organic tomatoes had better than five times more calcium, 12 times more magnesium, three times more potassium, 600% more organic sodium (unlike table salt, organic sodium does not necessarily have adverse effects on blood pressure) sixty eight times more manganese, and 1900 times more iron. Organic spinach had more than twice the calcium, five and a half times the magnesium, better than three times the potassium, seventy times the sodium, one hundred and seventeen times the amount of manganese, and eighty times the iron. Organic lettuce had three and a half times the calcium, three times the magnesium, three times the potassium, thirty times the sodium, one hundred and sixty nine times the manganese, and fifty seven times the iron. The overall result of the Rutgers research suggests that organic foods are 87% richer in minerals and trace elements than commercially grown food. As you can see, with organically grown produce, you get more nutrients for the dollar.

I have been eating a vegetarian raw foods diet for many years. I found that I was getting acid reflux from eating certain raw foods. Some of the foods that I had trouble with were raw peppers, raw onions, raw garlic, raw cucumbers and radishes. I also had a bloated feeling when I ate grains and cereals. After I starting drinking Kangen water, I noticed that my tolerance for these foods had changed. I am now able to enjoy the benefits of my favorite raw and organic fruits and vegetables without fear of bloating, heartburn or acid reflux. If you are serious about making changes to your lifestyle and your health, Kangen water will eventually be an integral part of that change. I have found that by changing my water I have changed my life in many ways. One way being my ability to enjoy foods that are essential to health and beneficial to longevity. So read labels, eat raw organic fruits and vegetables whenever possible and drink plenty of Kangen water. I will see you in the organic foods aisle. With a Safe Canteen full of Kangen water.

The Shocking Hazards of MSG You May Not Know About Part 1

25 09 2007

I had heard about MSG about 13 years ago, when a friend of mine had a severe reaction to it in some canned clams he was adding to the linguini sauce. I felt fine, but he was in such a state that he could not drive himself home. He was dizzy, and his eyesight was blurred.

Several years later, I experienced increased heart rate, and a severe flush to my face, to the point of hives. My hands shook, and my eyes would not focus. Juan told me that this was due to the MSG in my ramen noodles packet.

I had forgotten about it for about five or six years, until Juan had reminded me of it. He taught me to read labels in the supermarkets so that I would know exactly what I was putting into my body. One label he read contained MSG. I looked, but saw no sign of it. Juan pointed out “Monosodium Glutamate.”

Many people, I am finding out, do not know the technical name for MSG. It’s Monosodium Glutamate, also known as processed free glutamic acid. Long enough to be a bit difficult to read, but not quite as long as the other stuff I am still trying to figure out.

Knowing the words Monosoium Glutamate is not necessarily enough to catch the ingredient before you eat it. It’s become difficult to tell whether or not MSG is in the food, because it goes by so many names. The list is quite long, but here are just a few:

  • Gelatin
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
  • Yeast Extract
  • Malted Barley
  • Rice Syrup or Brown Rice Syrup

I’ve come across a detailed web site listing the dangers of MSG, in brutally honest detail. It’s called TruthInLabeling.org. Please check out this web site.

Click here to learn about the presence of MSG in thousands of products, and their effects on the human body. Watch the videos to be more informed.

I didn’t know that many baby formulas contain a form of MSG.

This is the first in a series of articles I will be publishing about the dangers of MSG. Please check back to learn more.

Too Alkaline?

15 05 2007

Recently, we were asked a question about the body being too alkaline.

Yes, it is possible for the body to be too alkaline.

Alkalosis is a condition of excess base, or alkali, in the body’s fluids. It is the opposite of acidosis, or excess acid in the body, and can be caused by different conditions.

The following information has been lifted directly from the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The lungs and kidneys regulate the acid/base status of the body. Decreased carbon dioxide or increased bicarbonate levels create an excessive alkaline state called alkalosis.

Respiratory alkalosis is caused by lower carbon dioxide levels. Hyperventilation (increased rate of breathing) causes the body to lose carbon dioxide. Altitude or a disease that causes reduced oxygen in the blood triggers the individual to breathe faster. This reduces carbon dioxide levels which results in respiratory alkalosis.

Metabolic alkalosis is caused by an excess of bicarbonate in blood. Hypochloremic alkalosis is caused by an extreme lack or loss of chloride, such as may be caused by prolonged vomiting. The kidneys compensate for the chloride loss by conserving bicarbonate.

Hypokalemic alkalosis is caused by the kidneys’ reaction to an extreme lack or loss of potassium which may be caused by some diuretic medications.

Compensated alkalosis is caused when the body has partially compensated for alkalosis, returning the acid/base balance to normal, even though bicarbonate and carbon dioxide levels remain abnormal.

Symptoms

* Confusion (can progress to stupor or coma)
* Muscle twitching
* Hand tremor
* Prolonged muscle spasms (tetany)
* Nausea, vomiting
* Numbness or tingling in the face or extremities
* Light-headedness

Signs and tests

* Tests for pH indicate alkalosis or acidosis.
* Tests for carbon dioxide and bicarbonate levels indicate the cause of alkalosis or acidosis, either respiratory (breathing-related) or metabolic (kidney-related).

Some of these tests include:

* Arterial blood gas (or venous blood gas)
* Urinalysis
* Litmus paper (urine dipstick tests)
* Urine pH
* Chem-20

Treatment

Treatment of alkalosis depends on finding the specific cause. For alkalosis caused by hyperventilation, breathing into a paper bag causes more carbon dioxide to be retained. Oxygen may be administered.

Medications to correct chemical loss (chloride, potassium, etc.) may be needed. Vital signs (temperature, pulse, rate of breathing, blood pressure) are monitored.

Expectations (prognosis)

Most cases of alkalosis respond well to treatment.

Complications

* Coma
* Arrhythmias
* Electrolyte imbalance (such as hypokalemia)

Calling your health care provider

Call your health care provider if a person becomes confused, is unable to concentrate, or if the person is unable to “catch their breath”.

Go to the emergency room or call the local emergency number (such as 911) if a person passes out (loses consciousness), experiences severe breathing difficulties, has seizures, or if symptoms of alkalosis occur and rapidly worsen.

Prevention

The prevention depends on the cause of the alkalosis. Normally, individuals with healthy kidneys and lungs do not significantly experience alkalosis.
