Too Alkaline?

15 05 2007

Recently, we were asked a question about the body being too alkaline.

Yes, it is possible for the body to be too alkaline.

Alkalosis is a condition of excess base, or alkali, in the body’s fluids. It is the opposite of acidosis, or excess acid in the body, and can be caused by different conditions.

The following information has been lifted directly from the MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The lungs and kidneys regulate the acid/base status of the body. Decreased carbon dioxide or increased bicarbonate levels create an excessive alkaline state called alkalosis.

Respiratory alkalosis is caused by lower carbon dioxide levels. Hyperventilation (increased rate of breathing) causes the body to lose carbon dioxide. Altitude or a disease that causes reduced oxygen in the blood triggers the individual to breathe faster. This reduces carbon dioxide levels which results in respiratory alkalosis.

Metabolic alkalosis is caused by an excess of bicarbonate in blood. Hypochloremic alkalosis is caused by an extreme lack or loss of chloride, such as may be caused by prolonged vomiting. The kidneys compensate for the chloride loss by conserving bicarbonate.

Hypokalemic alkalosis is caused by the kidneys’ reaction to an extreme lack or loss of potassium which may be caused by some diuretic medications.

Compensated alkalosis is caused when the body has partially compensated for alkalosis, returning the acid/base balance to normal, even though bicarbonate and carbon dioxide levels remain abnormal.

Symptoms

* Confusion (can progress to stupor or coma)
* Muscle twitching
* Hand tremor
* Prolonged muscle spasms (tetany)
* Nausea, vomiting
* Numbness or tingling in the face or extremities
* Light-headedness

Signs and tests

* Tests for pH indicate alkalosis or acidosis.
* Tests for carbon dioxide and bicarbonate levels indicate the cause of alkalosis or acidosis, either respiratory (breathing-related) or metabolic (kidney-related).

Some of these tests include:

* Arterial blood gas (or venous blood gas)
* Urinalysis
* Litmus paper (urine dipstick tests)
* Urine pH
* Chem-20

Treatment

Treatment of alkalosis depends on finding the specific cause. For alkalosis caused by hyperventilation, breathing into a paper bag causes more carbon dioxide to be retained. Oxygen may be administered.

Medications to correct chemical loss (chloride, potassium, etc.) may be needed. Vital signs (temperature, pulse, rate of breathing, blood pressure) are monitored.

Expectations (prognosis)

Most cases of alkalosis respond well to treatment.

Complications

* Coma
* Arrhythmias
* Electrolyte imbalance (such as hypokalemia)

Calling your health care provider

Call your health care provider if a person becomes confused, is unable to concentrate, or if the person is unable to “catch their breath”.

Go to the emergency room or call the local emergency number (such as 911) if a person passes out (loses consciousness), experiences severe breathing difficulties, has seizures, or if symptoms of alkalosis occur and rapidly worsen.

Prevention

The prevention depends on the cause of the alkalosis. Normally, individuals with healthy kidneys and lungs do not significantly experience alkalosis.

Your Acid/Alkaline Balance Can Be Corrected with the Water You Drink

22 02 2007

There has been a lot of talk recently about acid /alkaline imbalance.  The experts can help us by recommending how we correct this imbalance.

What is the problem with Acid/Alkaline Balance?  Your body functions at its best when it is in
balance, when it is not too acidic or too alkaline.  The unfortunate thing is that almost all of us are acidic due to our diets, what we drink and the effect of stress from the pollution in our environment and psychologically.  When acids build up in our body it causes our systems to become out of balance.

What are the effects?  "Acid wastes build up in the body in the form of cholesterol, gallstones, kidney stones, arterial plaque, urates, phosphates and sulfates. These acidic waste products are the direct cause of premature aging and the onset of chronic disease," According to Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky.  What the body does to restore its optimal pH balance is it depletes minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium from the organs and bones.  This may cause your immune system to become fatigued from handling an excess of acid. Your body will store acidic wastes in your body like your muscles and fat rather than releasing the acidic waste into the bloodstream.

Just about every condition I can think of, from arthritis to diabetes to cancer, is associated with acidity," notes Dr. Robert Atkins, the well known author, health and diet expert.  "The countless names of illnesses do not really matter.  What does matter is that they all come from the same root cause…too much tissue acid waste in the body!", says Theodore A. Baroody, ND, Ph.D.

What can be done about this?  Massive research about this reveals that you can take some simple steps to help neutralize acid build-up in the blood and maintain a balanced pH.  Simple steps you can take are:

* Exercise
* Avoiding highly acid-forming food and drink
* Drinking the right water

What is the "right" water?  According to Dr. Leonard Horowitz in "Aids and Ebola", "International studies show that populations with little or no history of illness, such as cancer, drink higher pH (alkaline) waters. After all potential risk factors were considered and factored out, it became evident that they had been drinking waters with a pH of 9.0 to 10.0."

Alkaline ionized water "first came to notice in Japan, where researchers noted that people drinking water that came from certain fast- moving rocky mountain streams enjoyed extraordinarily good health. It turned out that this naturally occurring water was alkaline and had a different structure and electrical properties." Larry Clapp, PhD. in "Prostate Health in 90 days"

Alkaline ionized water was used in hospitals in Japan.  It was noticed that patients were   experiencing marked health improvements and were released from the hospital and sent home.  After a short time the patients had reoccurences and were re-admitted to the hospital.

Alkaline ionized water can now be produced at home with a small kitchen unit called the Enagic SD501, which has been in long use in Japan.  More and more health professionals have had the opportunity to evaluate the effects of Alkaline water ionizers on clients due to the fact that Alkaline water ionizers have become popular in North America and Canada:

We can "assist the body in being more alkaline with …drinking alkaline water." writes   Sue Pollock, N.D.

In "Alkalize or Die", Dr. T. Baroody writes, "It is my opinion that ionized water will change the way in which all health practitioners and the public approach their health in the coming years."

"I believe that the best water is water that is alkaline (reduced) and purified using a small device known as a water ionizer." (Dr. Stefan Kuprowsky)

Well why not just rely on a change of diet, you may ask?  Researcher and author of "Reverse Aging", Sang Whang says that the danger is we might omit important foods from our diet:

"Since the waste products that we are trying to discharge are acidic, the right kind of water is alkaline water…My personal recommendation is to enjoy the foods that we like, but do not over-eat or exclude any food. Eat in moderation following the professional dieticians' "balanced diet" concept, and let alkaline water do the job of cleansing acidic wastes."

The best and highest grade of Alkaline Ionized water for your acid/alkaline balance is Kangen Water produced from Enagic's SD501 unit.

pH-inding the Right Balance

9 01 2007

At the first mention of acidity and alkalinity, eyes glaze over. After all, these terms sound somewhat scientific, and vague memories of junior high science class and litmus paper changing color may come to mind. However, thebalance between acidity and alkalinity, and its importance, can be explained quite simply and should be explained. This balance is essential to good health.

pH Balance and Kidney Damage

4 01 2007

If you've read anything about diets lately, you've probably read warnings that excessive amounts of proteins or minerals may damage your kidneys. What you probably haven't read is that excessive amounts of acid waste in your body can cause
serious kidney damage too.

Kidneys are the body’s last-resort filtering mechanism. If the kidneys don't work properly, toxins build up and poison your blood. The results can be fatal. To keep your kidneys functioning well, you need to reduce the overall acid level in your body. The right type of foods and supplements can help. Because damaged kidney cells cannot be regenerated, there is no time to waste.

THE RISK

When acid enters the bloodstream as a result of improper digestion or excessive consumption of acid-causing substances, some of the acid is removed by the liver and converted into fat cells to be stored away from the body’s vital organs. However, when too much acid accumulates and the liver can't process all of it, the remaining acid is

pH Balance and Arthritis

4 01 2007

When your body accumulates an excessive amount of acid, you are at risk for arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. If you already suffer from one of these diseases, high acidity will intensify your inflammation, soft tissue degeneration and bone loss.

A highly acidic pH prevents the body from functioning properly. The presence of acid waste makes it increasingly difficult for cells to absorb the fuel they need. Vital body systems like the immune system start to malfunction. The result is increased inflammation and soft tissue degeneration. Acids are also solidified and deposited throughout the body, leading to bone loss.

The longer you wait to reduce your body’s acidity, the longer you remain at risk for arthritis and related illnesses.

THE RISK

Arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia are autoimmune diseases. They are the result of
